Presentation on Sound

January 5, 2011

After we filmed and edited our videos our task was to make a presentation showing why we made the descions we made, aout filming and editing, and how we followed these desciions through. We also explaing the procceses we went through to make the video (filming etc.) We learnt many things from this Project, which we explain these in our presentation, which we can then understand and improve our video to get the highest mark possible that my group and I can.

Bejeweled

April 29, 2010

I had played bejeweled before but only when I was bored on my old phone, as it was already installed on my phone, but i didn’t find the game appealing at all. After being asked to play it again I did but this time on the internet. I had already judged this game as not a very good one from my previous experiences, so when I had to wait for an advert to finish playing it added to this judgment.
When i began to play the game i found that it was very easy and repetitive and almost gave up, but as i mastered each level i saw the addictive side to it. As each level is cleared the game becomes harder and harder, with jewels that you cannot move or bombs that you have to clear within a certain amount of time, this made me want to play more and master more and more levels.

Overall, i thought that this game has gotten better as the years have gone on and is more fun to play but i would never play it again given the choice, it wasn’t that fun.

My Evaluation

When we re-edited our footage there were less problems than when we first started to edit because we had exported the file, although, at times it was very, very slow which made it difficult to work with but considering the problems that we had the first time that we edited our footage it was much, much easier.

We all followed our notes from our feedback sheets that we had received throughout the process of editing our thriller opening which made it much more easier to see what we needed to add or take away.

The were subtle changes that we made and mor drastic ones. Our ending has completely changed from having the boy chase after the girls to having him walk away leaving the music box with the girls. This not only produces more enigmas for the audience but lets the storyline flow better.

Another change we made are only noticeable in the sound. Our sound in our rough cut didn’t sound very realistic but we edited this and, fortunately, was able to spend more time searching for the right sounds to make it sound more realistic than what it already was.

A difficulty which we faced whilst editing was the sync of the sound and the filming. We found that when we closed the programme the sound seemed to have moved and wasnt in time with the footage anymore which made it hard for us to edit some parts. We realised what it was and once we had sorted this problem out we had no more problems with it which made it a lot more easier to edit.

Overall I am very happy with the final cut of ‘Music Box’ and it is quite clear that it has improved considerably from our original rought cut which will hopefully gain us the marks that we would like.

Editing The Trailer

April 18, 2010

My trailer of the Wii fit will include different clips of three Wii Fit trailers. These are:

The main one being the last video. This is because it has the most footage that will be useful in making a succesful trailer for the Wii Fit.

I decided against filming my own footage as i feel that the quality will be lost and you would be able to see which was my own footage and which was footage of an existing trailer; it will look realistic if i use the same kind of footage in my trailer.

Editing the trailer will take place on serif and the sound effects that i shall use will be obtained from www.dilandau.com.

Shortly, I will post my final edit of my own Wii Fit trailer as i am in the middle of editing it now.

Story Board For Wii Fit

April 18, 2010

below is a written copy of my Wii Fit trailer:

Shot 1: The Wii fit sign will appear on the screen.

Shot 2: This will fade into it actually being a bird’s eye view of the board but the Wii fit sign wont move just the board will fade onto the screen.

Shot 3: The camera will then move to a behind view of someone stepping onto the board.

Shot 4, 5 and 6: Will be shots of  different peoples feet on the board from in front.

Shots 7, 8 and 9: will be of the whole individual on the board from in front.

Shot 10: This shot will be of the game that the person in the previous shot was playing, on-screen.

Shots 11, 12 and 13: Will be of a couples on the board taking it in turn.

Shot 14: This shot will be the game which the couple in the previous shot was playing.

Shots 15, 16 and 17: These shots will be of families playing on the board.

Shot 18: This shot will involve the game, on-screen, of what the family in the previous shot was playing.

Shots 19, 20 and 21: These will all be the reverse of shots 1,2 and 3.

The diajetic sound in this trailer will be the ending of an All Time Low song as this drum beat reflects the ‘fun’ ‘upbeat’ nature of the game that i intent to portray within this trailer.

Changes to Rough Cut

March 30, 2010

Below is my groups first draft and rough cut of our opening sequence to a thriller; we received a level 2. 30 out of 60 for it which means there are a lot of improvements to be made. I will discuss these improvements and establish the changes that will be made when re-doing it.

My group not only received constructive feedback from our teacher but also from an experienced film editor who himself has edited many short clip films. The main narrative to our short clip is that the boys dangerous, a criticism to our footage were that the boy is not seen in this way and this needs to be improved. We need to film the boy making him looking scarier, maybe using different camera techniques to portray him having power and extreme close-ups focusing on individual features of his face.

A main criticism and focus point we need to improve is the beginning bit of our opening sequence when the four friends are on the train. We were informed that this part of our work lets the rest of the thriller down as it doesn’t have the use of clear, precise shots and use of good editing techniques. A few ways which we were advised to change this were the variation of different shot types, we didn’t seem to use many reaction and close up shots. Instead of using shots and close-ups to tell the story we used sound, we will change this into some reaction shots and use the use of body language to add to the story. When we come to re-filming certain shots, we will also film extra shots that can be added into our thriller opening sequence, a few examples are:

Reaction shots of Jess and I on the train when the lights go out and down the alley to show we’re scared

Close up/mid shot of the friends getting off the train, maybe having the camera at a low angle so the focus is of just the feet

Add in more point of view shots from both the young boy and the friends

Frame the young boy being scary

Adding to us re-filming and adding in more shots to our rough cut, we also need to cut/delete out some of the bits which use up the time and are not really needed or important to the story; a few examples of these are:

When the friends are laughing on the train, cut it by 2-4 seconds

At the end down the alley cut the bit where the young boy shuts the music box and run towards the 2 girls

Cut the image of the train station sign and the oyster card machine at the beginning and just have it start from the train coming in to the station.

Another key aspect to change when we are re-editing our footage is the use of Diegetic and non-Diegetic sound at some points through the clip, especially in the shots down the alleyway. We used the use of sound well here but one bit in particular ruins the whole thing, at 1.22 we can here both the Diegetic and non-diegectic sound, to add to the eerie affect we need to cut out the Diegetic sound and just have the sound of the music box playing and the background music, when the music box is shut it will then be silent. Also we need to add a sound of a crackling light when the lights go out so the audience know for sure what has happened and here adjust or take out the screams as they sound very unrealistic.

A key feature in the opening sequence is the titles and names of the cast, also the directors, camera man etc. We need to remember when editing our final cut to add this in and make sure the fonts match together and link in with our narrative.

We plan to accomplish these changes by setting a date and group film again, at the same setting and time; this will allow us more footage and more accurate footage to work with. We will accomplish the changes of the sound and editing techniques by spending time re-editing our footage and new footage.
